The Buddha and his Teachings
by Narada Maha Thera
Since its first appearance, Ven. Mahathera Narada's The Buddha and His Teachings has come to be widely regarded as one of the clearest and most detailed introductions to the basic teachings of Buddhism available in English. In simple and lucid language the author explains those concepts and doctrines which form the common bedrock of all schools of Buddhism as they have been preserved by the oldest living Buddhist tradition, the Theravada or School of the Elders.

The first part of the work is devoted to the life of the Buddha. The remainder of the book explains in detail the Buddha's teachings. The final chapters show the continuing relevance of Buddhism to the problems of human life today.

Ven. Mahathera Narada (1898–1983) was one of the most eminent monks of Sri Lanka in recent times, highly respected for his conduct and missionary work.

Mindfulness of Breathing
by Bhikkhu Nanamoli
Anapanasati or “mindfulness of breathing” was the method of meditation that the Buddha himself used to attain enlightenment, and during his long teaching career he often stressed its importance to his disciples. In the living Buddhist tradition mindfulness of breathing is regarded as the “root” meditation subject, the basis for all other approaches to meditation as well as a self-sufficient system that covers the entire range of practice for gaining calm and insight.

The present book is an anthology of all the important source material from the Páli Canon and Commentaries on this core system of meditation. The book includes the famous Anapanasati Sutta, the Discourse on Mindfulness of Breathing (MN No. 118); the commentary on this sutta (including a substantial passage from the Visuddhimagga); an analytical treatise from the canonical Paþisambhidamagga; and a selection of suttas from the Pali Canon. All this material has been rendered into lucid English by Bhikkhu Nanamoli, one of the foremost translators of Pali Buddhist texts in our age.

Contemplation of Geelings
Contemplation of Feelings
by Nyanaponika Thera

Feeling is a key factor in human life. Whether people are fully aware of it or not, their lives are chiefly spent in an unceasing endeavour to increase their pleasant feelings and to avoid unpleasant feelings. Feeling, when contemplated, is also a key factor on the path of liberation, and therefore the Contemplation of Feelings has always been highly regarded as an effective aid on that path in Buddhism. The Contemplation of Feelings is one of the four Foundations of Mindfulness (satipaþþhana) and may be undertaken in the framework of that meditative practice aiming at the growth of Insight (vipassana).

This booklet contains a translation of a collection of discourses by the Buddha on feelings and their contemplation, the Connected Discourses on Feelings, preceded by a penetrating introduction.

The notes and essays deal with profound topics such as ontology, metaphysics, nuclear physics, logic, but there is also humour, irony, sarcasm and light poetry. Four essays were earlier published in a Wheel Publication called Pathways of Buddhist Thought. The notes were collected, edited and introduced by Nyanaponika Thera.

Banner of the Arahants
by Khantipalo

This book covers in outline, but with many interesting stories and examples, the history and development of the Sangha, the Buddhist Order of monks and nuns from their beginnings in the Buddha's time to the present day. Much of the information contained in this book is scattered widely in many different works or is the result of the author's own experience as a Buddhist monk in India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The chapter on the Sangha in the principal Buddhist countries of Southeast and South Asia contains information not available elsewhere, while that on bhikkhunìs, the Buddhist nuns is unique in its coverage. Translations of some of the inspiring verses of the enlightened disciples of the Buddha are given and the author shows how this living tradition of enlightened teachers comes down to the present day.

The Root of Good and Evil
The Roots of Good and Evil
by Nyanaponika Thera

Greed, hatred, and delusion—these are the three bad roots, the conditions for suffering and trouble, in us. Conversely the good roots, the conditions for true happiness and joy, are non-greed (i.e generosity), non-hatred (loving-kindness), and non-delusion (wisdom). All our troubles and suffering stem essentially from the bad roots while our joy and happiness comes from the good ones. It is important to know and understand these roots if we are going to make an end of suffering and attain true peace and happiness. This book explains in a penetrative way the nature of these six roots. It contains discourses of the Buddha on the subject together with traditional commentarial explanations.
