Vimuttimagga and Visuddhimagga
A Comparative Study
by P.V. Bapat

This comparative study explores the relation between the Vimuttimagga and Visuddhimagga, the Path of Freedom and the Path of Purification, both classical meditation manuals of the Theravada tradition.

The Vimuttimagga, extant as a whole only in a Chinese translation, and partially in Tibetan quotations, is generally regarded as the predecessor of the Visuddhimagga. Although both manuals are Abhidhammic in style, the Vimuttimagga is more practical and concise whereas the Visuddhimagga is more scholarly and elaborate.
This study, first published in 1937, is for those who would like to study the similarities and differences between the two works.

P. V. Bapat, Ph.D (Harvard), was Professor of Ancient Indian Culture, Pali, and Buddhism at Poona University. Besides making editions of Pali texts, he translated into English the Shan-chien-p`i-p`o-sha, the Chinese version the of Samantapāsādikā, in collaboration with A. Hirakawa

Jataka Tales of the Buddha
An Anthology
Retold by Ken and Visakha Kawasaki

Whereas Western intellectuals seek the essence of Buddhism in its doctrines and meditation practices, the traditional Buddhists of Asia absorb the ideas and values of their spiritual heritage through its rich narrative literature about the Buddha and his disciples. The most popular collection of Buddhist stories is, without doubt, the Játakas. These are the stories of the Buddha's past births, relating his experiences as he passed from life to life on the way to becoming a Buddha. At times he takes the form of a bird, at times he is born as a hare, a monkey, a prince, a merchant, or an ascetic, but in each case he uses the challenges he meets to grow in generosity, virtue, patience, wisdom, and compassion.

This anthology of Jatakas, ably told by Ken and Visakha Kawasaki, remains faithful to the original yet presents the stories in clear and simple language. It thereby makes the Jatakas accessible even to young readers and to those for whom English is not their first language.

Buddhist Nuns
The Birth and Development of a Women's Monastic Order
By Mohan Wijayaratna

The Community of Buddhist Nuns is one of the oldest women’s organizations in human history. In this book Dr. Wijayaratna explains how this community was started by the Buddha in the 5th century BCE, and how it developed gradually. To show the motivation and the way of life of these ordained women, the author uses the oldest texts of the Pali canon. Several chapters of this book discuss the position of Buddhist nuns in the field of the three famous monastic themes: poverty, chastity and obedience. This book describes in detail the structure of the organization of their Community, their day-to-day practices, and the virtues and mental discipline through which they strove to attain the sublime goal, Nibbana.

Similes of the Buddha
An Introduction
By Hellmuth Hecker

This book is an introductory guide to the rich, wonderful, and profound world of Buddhist similes. The Buddha used many similes as a skilful means to facilitate the understanding of teachings that otherwise could appear overly abstruse and dry to his listeners. Thus, contemplation of the similes and the explanations as given in this book will widen and deepen one's understanding of the Teaching of the Buddha.

Dr. Hellmuth Hecker is a well known German writer on Buddhism. His many works include a partial German translation of the Saíyutta Nikaya, essays on the main disciples of the Buddha (published in Great Disciples of the Buddha), works dealing with various aspects of the Buddha's teaching, as well as works on the history of Buddhism in Germany.

All of Us
All of US
Beset by Birth Decay and Death
By Ayya Khema

This booklet, containing transcriptions of twelve talks by the renowned Buddhist nun Ayya Khema, is for all people everywhere who seek liberation from suffering and desire true happiness.

The Buddha taught: “there’s only one thing I teach: suffering and its end.” Suffering is not only pain and grief, but all the unsatisfactoriness all of us experience during our lifetime. It is that unfulfilled striving in heart and mind which keeps pushing us in so many directions to find the ultimate satisfaction.

When we have realized that all the avenues we have tried have brought us to a dead end, then the time has come to turn to Buddha’s teachings and see for ourselves whether his promise of an end to suffering can be experienced within ourselves and whether true fulfillment is possible.

The Life of Nyanatiloka Thera
The Biography of a Western Buddhist Pioneer
By Bhikkhu Nyanatusita & Hellmuth Hecker

Ven. Nynatiloka was one of the pioneers of Buddhism in the modern world and the first European Buddhist monk. As the world's senior Western bhikkhu, ordained in 1903, Nyanatiloka attracted many disciples, through whose work his influence continues to be felt today, more than fifty years after his death. The core of this volume consists of a translation of Ñyanatiloka's autobiography, written in German when he was forty-eight. The remaining thirty-one years of his life, from 1926 until 1957, are presented as a biographical postscript, drawn from other sources.

The Life of the Buddha
The Life of the Buddha
Colouring Book
By Martha Aitchison

The tale of how a prince came to abandon a life of luxury and comfort and went away to discover the secret of happiness, suffering much penury before he reached his goal, seems the stuff of fairy stories. Yet it was a real man who achieved such a selfless and extraordinary deed. We know this man as the Buddha, the All Enlightened One, and this is his life, told as simply as possible for children, in words and drawings for them to colour.

Just Seeing
Just Seeing
Insight Meditation and Sense-Perception
By Cynthia Thatcher

In eloquent, expressive language this book explores in depth the Buddha's significant teaching, “When seeing, just see; when hearing, just hear,” as it applies to the practice of insight meditation as taught by Mahasi Sayadaw. Along the way, the book touches on the two kinds of reality—ultimate and conventional—expounded in the Abhidhamma. The author explains these two realities through the example of a pointillist painting of Seurat that can be viewed in two ways. In addition, there are meditation instructions for beginners, an appendix on the perceptual process as described in Buddhist metaphysics, and a crossword puzzle of Pali terms.

The second essay, Change, investigates the concepts of change, impermanence and time in relation to experience and argues against equating them with the concept of flux or continuous change. In the third essay, The Buddha and Catch-22, the similarities between Joseph Heller's novel and the Buddha's Teaching are discussed. The next essay, The Myth of Sisyphus, is a Buddhist reinterpretation of the Greek myth of Sisyphus, which is symbolizing the endless, recurring nature of our tasks. Ven. Bodhesako also discusses Albert Camus' interpretation of this myth. The essay Faith investigates the relevance of faith in the Buddha's Teaching, while the last essay, Being and Craving, deals with the Buddhist concept of craving and its traditional interpretation.

Walking Meditation Walking Meditation
Ajahn Brahmavamso, Ajahn Nyanadhammo, Dharma Dorje

This booklet contains essays on walking meditation by three Buddhist teachers.

Walking meditation is an important, but often neglected, part of Buddhist meditation practice. Through walking meditation, energy can be aroused, concentration stabilized, and the Buddha's teachings penetrated through using wise reflection. Many meditators have become enlightened while doing walking meditation because of the mental alertness and sharpness that it arouses. Modern scientific studies have showed that walking, besides its physical benefits, is also beneficial for the mind—improving memory skills, learning ability, concentration and abstract reasoning, besides reducing stress and uplifting ones' spirits.

The three essays cover all aspects of walking meditation and describe how it is used in the various Theravada Buddhist meditation traditions.

Wise Reflection
Steve Weissman

In this essay an important aspect of Buddhist meditation practice is discussed: the use of wise reflection(yoniso manasikara) as a basis for developing wisdom.

Despite the fact that in the Pali Canon many reflective meditations are given, they are often not practiced in current meditation systems — a situation that can easily lead to an unbalanced practice.
